| Project description |

In 1997 the company Swedish Match shut down its factory in the town of Arvika in Western Varmland, Sweden.
In December that year the Arvika Industrial centre economic association bought the old factory to convert it into an industrial and knowledge centre, thus creating the campus arvika project.
The bottom line aim of the project is to improve the job opportunities in Western Varmland by stimulating growth of enterprises in areas other than heavy industry. It has been divided into 3 pillars namely the business centre, the learning centre and a business development programme.
1. Business Centre
The incubator programme assists aspiring businesses with office space and support services. A new business hotel with offices, a joint conference room and a kitchenette has been opened. A fixed IT network allows tenants to have their own IT line, mail and web servers.
2. Training Centre
Use of modern communication equipment for distance learning and training.
The collaboration with colleges and universities gives access to extremely well qualified and specialised training (from Sweden and abroad)
Information resources give the regions businesses access to problem-solving and competence development reports, investigations, surveys and research contacts.
The premises have been designed to accomodate conferences
3. Business Development Programme
Advice is provided to small and new businesses in such areas as contacts with local authorities, support, financing, marketing, premises and restructuring.
Creation and development of networks amongst businesses
Collaboration was begun with the local employment office on a "start your own business" initiative which tutors and monitors start-ups.
The marketing and market development programme organises breakfast meetings, videoconferences, seminars and trade fairs.
Industrial exhibits on different scientific themes are organised.
The project has shown impressive results:
45 businesses created
270 new jobs created
140 Jobs maintained
18 jobs created in the project
400 people have started distance college education
120 people have completed the entrepreneur programme
To achieve the objectives of the project, Campus Arvika works with education companies, a wide range of consultants, call centres and various service companies.
