Introduction to Cyprus
The Cyprian partner in the SAIL proposal is the Technical Chamber of Cyprus (ETEK), which is a non-profit organization formed and operating under seperate law (No 224/90) as a Public Benefit Organization. It is regulating the Engineering Profession and is acting as the official Technical Advisor to Government and Local Authorites.
The Chamber's scope is the promotion of Science in the different fields related to the disciplines of its members in Engineering and Technology in general, and their progress for an independant economic, social and cultural development of the Republic of Cyprus.
From this role it has an influential position over economic, technical and other issues in Cyprus. ETEK participates on a very large number of committees and can take initiatives for action when it sees fit. It is governed by a 30-Member General Council representing all engineering discliplines.
The Chamber exercises any task and authority necessary and has jurisdiction to excerise any necessary action for the promotion of its scope. More specifically, the Chamber:
(a) Perfoms registration of engineers and issues the relevant certificates and working licences.
(b) Undertakes arbitrations, pursues mutual agreements concerning any issue or debate relating to the engineering science.
(c) Recommends the formation of new engineering fields or sub-divisions of the existing ones.
(d) Represents the registered Engineers in the Republic of Cyprus and abroad.
(e) Exercises disciplinary authority on its members, according to this Law.
(f) Participates in international organizations, chamber associations and international unions of engineers, develops affiliations with similair organizations of other countries, organizes scientific conferences, exhibitions and other activities for the promotion of its scope.
(g) Informs the public with announcements, publications or any other suitable way, on engineering related issues, and promotes the broader understanding from the public of the relevant issues and problems.
(h) Consults the relevant authorites, after their invitation, on any issues of its jurisdiction.
(i) Studies any scientific, technical, techno economic or development issues, relevant to any of the fields of the engineering science and expresses its opinion.
(j) Gathers data for statistical purposes and develops statistics on any issues related to the fields of the engineering science.
(k) Encourages and promotes the technical education in the Republic to any of the fields of the engineering science.
(l) Imposes and collects the fixed fees for any certificate or any other legal document and for any services rendered.
(m) Maintains a member's registry and issues the working licences.
(n) Declares honorary memberships and awards any other dictinctions.
