Academic - Industry Profile There are clusters of industry both formal and informal in the NW Ireland region: Engineering Associations in both Donegal and Sligo; Clothing and Textiles; Electronics; Craftworkers Guild etc. There are also vibrant Chambers of Commerce and Industry in Sligo, Donegal and Leitrim. The Irish Business Employers Confederation represents over 350 companies and organisations in the region.
Examples of Industry / Academic projects:
· The Institute of Technology Sligo is designated as the National Toolmaking Training Centre. Specialised courses for Toolmaking Apprentices, a Diploma in Tool Design and update courses for industry are continuously conducted at the college. The facilities of the National Toolmaking Centre include off-line programming, 3-D CAD workstations, 5-axis machining, electrodischarge, machining (EDM) and metrology. This centre allows students to gain experience on some of the most advanced CNC machines available.
· LYIT was recently commissioned to run the Embark programme in conjunction with B.I.C. systems for Donegal County Enterprise Board. The programme aims to encourage SME’s in the County to embrace new technology and specifically the business benefits associated with trading using e-commerce.
· IT, Sligo has recently opened a new Pharmaceutical Science Centre. The Centre contains a Class B Cleanroom, Tablet manufacturing and coating facilities and emulsion manufacture equipment. Within this facility students manufacture sterile medicines, tablets, ointments and creams. Students also complete projects in areas such as validation, quality assurance and regulatory affairs. The Institute also delivers the only Degree in Pharmaceutical Science in Ireland. Academics from the School of Science are involved in a range of R&D, consultancy and training projects with local healthcare companies. The healthcare industry is rapidly expanding in the Sligo area.
· The School of Engineering in IT Sligo has just launched a course customised to the needs of the Masonite Company (Engineered Wood Products) in Co Leitrim. This course was developed in consultation with the company and will be delivered largely on the customer’s premises to a group of employees. The students will travel occasionally to IT Sligo, for access to specialist laboratories, workshops and equipment and for examinations. The course, leading to the award of a National Certificate in Engineering, will be delivered over a three-year period.
· IBEC Retail Skillnets Programme was developed to provide occupational qualifications for people within the retail sector. This programme was run in conjunction with the University of Ulster at Magee College and provides a Certificate in Retail Management Practice to participants. Diploma and Degree courses are currently being developed.
