Academic - Industry Profile
The economy of the Upper Galilee Regional Council settlements is based primarily on three fields: agriculture, industry and tourism. Approximately 1.6 million tourists visit the Galilee annually.
Total economic activity in these fields about 630 million dollars a year.
R & D
The Upper Galilee Regional Council considers research and development as very important infrastructure, essential to advancement and development of the region and its ability to cope in the future with challenges. Together with academic programs, the R&D network is the key to attracting human and economic resources to the region.
· The Experimental Farms – for agricultural experiments are operated as independent R&D projects by the council’s Agricultural Corporation.
· Migal – a scientific centre for research and development in agriculture, industry, biotechnology and environmental quality and centre for training schools and university students and teachers in science and technology. Migal, which was established in 1979 to develop the cooperation between the agricultural and industrial sectors and science innovation, succeeded to develop both the agriculture and the industry in the region and some Biotechnological start-ups.
· Fruit storage research laboratory – The laboratory in the Galilee has made significant contributions to the commercial storage of apples, plums, avocadoes, nectarines and kiwi fruit. It is available for research on a wide variety of fruits for all sectors of horticulture.
· MATI (Centre for Encouragement of Enterprise) helps to promote new and existing businesses.
· MEYTAV (Centre for Technological Initiatives) assists and support entrepreneurs who have ideas involving innovating technology – the Galilee Technological Incubator.
· Northern R&D – Agricultural research and development in the Galilee and the Golan Heights, within the framework of the Migal Institute, to increase the profitability of the existing branches in the region and develop new means of production, technologies and crops.
Northern R&D’s main goal is to direct the agricultural branches in the region into profitable channels. Its objective is increasing profitability and stability of agriculture in the region by improving existing crops and developing new technologies and crops. It also made efforts in applying and transferring techniques developed by Northern R&D and other research institutes by means of model farms and active extension service to the agricultural community in the Galilee.

In many of the kibbutzim in the region innovative activity is taking place with the development of new products, industrial lines and completely new "branches".

Gavish - Management and Technology Transfer
Gavish was created in 2000, to mine the commercial and industrial resources of MIGAL Research Institute. A management and holdings company with sole rights to MIGAL's intellectual property, Gavish establishes and nurtures new companies while also forming strategic alliances and establishing technology frameworks for in- and out-licensing.
MIGAL Research Institute brings together some of Israel's foremost researchers in life sciences. This scientific community has been active since 1979, making important contributions to fields such as biotechnolgy, agriculture and environmental sciences.
Gavish identifies opportunites to leverage innovations developed at MIGAL into commercial applications that nurture the biotechnology industry. Gavish's diversified multidisciplinary approach maximises the inherent value of the institute's intellectual property. Maytav Technological Incubator
The Centre was founded by the Municipality of Kiryat Shmona and the Regional Council of Upper Galilee and operates as a non-profit organization, which owns a holding company. A Projects Evaluation and Review Committee, consisting of a group of 14 scientists, industrialists and economists support the Board of Directors.
The Centre encourages and supports projects based on technological innovation. Each project is structered as a legally independent company (Co. Ltd.) owned by the entrepeneurs, a business partner, and the holding company of the Centre. It provides each project with laboratory and office space, office services and professional support for a period of up to two years. In the course of this period the project is expected to find a strategic investor, who will provide the necessary funds for future endevours and access to the world market.
The Centre will welcome strategic investors in the holding company and/or the projects, for the prpose of promoting:
1. Business connections for potential projects;
2. Marketing of products developed;
3. Investment.
