The Malopolska region spreads over 15,144 km² (4.8% of the total area of Poland) and has a population of 2 234 000 people (8.5% of total Polands population). With 742,000 inhabitants Kraków (Cracow) is the largest town in the region by far. Other major towns include Tarnów, the second largest, and Nowy Sącz, Oświęcim as well as Chrzanów.
The region in the far south of Poland borders on the Slovak Republic and is strategically situated at the east of an extensive network of important European consumer markets. Motorways connect Kraków with important industrial region of Silesia (6 million consumers) with Rzeszów and Przemyśl (near the border with Ukraine) in the east and Zakopane (in the Tatra Mountains) in the far south of the region. There is also a good railway network in Malopolska with the shuttle rail service between Kraków and Warsaw (the trip takes less than three hours). Second biggest Polish airport after Warsaw provides connections with a number of European cities.
