Lower Silesian Voivodship was established on January 1, 1999 since when the new administrative division forced on the base of Decree of the Cabinet (signed in August 7, 1998). Lower Silesia (Dolnoslaskie)
Lower Silesian Voivodship is situated in south-western part of Poland. Western and south borders of the region are also frontiers of the Republic of Poland on Germany and the Czech Republic. Lower Silesia is linked with these countries via 37 border checkpoints, i.e. 19,2% of total number of border checkpoints in Poland. It is evidence of openness and accessibility and excellent localisation of the region in the Central Europe. Trans-border co-operation and economic exchange are one of assets of Lower Silesia.
The distance from Wrocław to Warsaw and to Berlin is approximately 350 km, to Dresden, Kraków and Prague – approximately 300 km and to Bratislava, Szczecin and Vienna – approximately 400 km. The closest Polish metropolitan areas of Katowice and Poznań are approximately 200 km away.
Present voivodship territory includes historical areas of this region. Exceptional landscape of our region is created by picturesque Sudety Mountains and the charming Silesian Lowland with the vast area of Odra valley. Landscape, tourist, economic, agricultural, culture and scientific values create excellent conditions for the development of the region. Great dynamic of growth of the region in all aspects results in this that recently it is the third region in Poland (first and second are the Masovian Region and the Silesian Region) taking into account GDP per capita. The enterprise-favouring climate is appreciated by renowned corporations which have located their investments in Lower Silesia, e.g. ABB, Alstom, Cadbury, General Electric, McCain, Cussons, Siemens, Toyota, Volkswagen and Volvo.
At the same time it is the region of great differences between municipalities and counties development what is the constant worry of regional authorities. Therefore important assets of the region and guarantee of success of Lower Silesia are inhabitants – young, well-educated, ambitious, creative and active in business. It depends on whole community of Lower Silesia if chances to win with the glorious future will be properly used.
