Introduction to North East Romania

Overview Description of the region its population, location and what it is known for.

The North East Development Region is made of six counties (Bacau, Iasi, Neamt, Botosani, Suceava, Vaslui), covering an area of 36,850 sq. km and a population of 3,823,492 inhabitants, being thus rated first among the eight regions of the country. The major towns of the region are: Iasi [348,000], Bacau [209,000], Piatra Neamt [125,000], Suceava [118,000], Vaslui [79,000] and Botosani [120,000], 44% of the population of the region being concentrated in the urban areas, the largest of which is Iasi municipality.

In terms of the extent, the region covers 15,46% of the total area of the country, which is 430,530 sq. km; the most extensive counties are Suceava, with an area of 8,553 sq. km, and Bacau, with 6,421 sq. km, while the distance to the capital of the country, Bucharest is 349 km (see map of the region).

Geographically, the region is neighbouring Ukraine in north, the Republic of Moldova in east, the Galati and Vrancea counties in south (South East Region), the counties of Maramures and Bistrita Nasaud in north west (North West Region) and the Maramures, Harghita and Covasna counties in west (Centre Region).

The Region is characterised by a harmonious combination between all the forms of the relief, 30% is represented by mountains, 30% Sub-Carpathian (hilly) relief, and 40% is covered by plateaus and plains. The counties of the Botosani, Vaslui and Iasi are 70% covered by the latter form of relief. North East Region has a huge tourist potential due to favourable natural conditions, picturesque landscapes and numerous cultural and historical monuments.
Also, the region comprises two national parks: Keelhaul and Bicaz-Chei-Hasmas, as well as plenty of natural reservations, dendrologic parks and natural monuments.

Another basic feature of the region is represented by the human capital. The North-East Region has available an education system providing education and adequate training to all education levels. The pre-university education is assured by a large number of schools and high schools of such profile as general culture, industrial, economic, sanitary, pedagogical and fine arts, where 590,580 pupils are attending (15,5% of the population of the region).
The North East Region has available ten prestigious state tertiary institutes, where 42,000 students are studying, in three university centres (Iasi, Bacau and Suceava).
Tertiary education has seen an important development after 1989; new specialisation sections were established such as: biotechnology, civil engineering in English and French, environment engineering, robot engineering, rural mountainology and so on.
Also, there is a number of the Research-Development Institutes as well as some companies developing similar activities: Research-Development National Institute for Technical Physics, Research Institut for Biotechnology, National Institute for Inventics, in Iasi; SC Aerostar Bacau, SC CAOM Pascani, SC Impex Romcatel Iasi, Tenoutil Suceava, Tehnoton Iasi.
