Introduction to Vastra Gotaland
The region was formed as an administrative region on 1st January 1999 and has a publicly elected Regional Council. The Region is responsible for Healthcare (hospitals and healthcare centres) and Regional Development (development of trade and industry, communications, tourism, culture, etc). The region consists of 49 cities and municipalities with a population of 1.5 million inhabitants (17% of Sweden's). Vastra Gotaland Region covers 24,000 square kilometres (6% of Sweden's area). Approx. 800,000 inhabitants live in the largest metropolitan area (Greater Goteborg). Part of Vastra Gotaland Region (with approx. 300,000 inhabitants) is an Objective 2 area of the Structural Funds for the period 2000-2006.
The number of employees in Vastra Gotaland is roughly 650,000 people. Approx. 325,000 (50%) are in the private sector dealing with production, services, trade and transportation. 150,000 work in the manufacturing industry, equalling nearly 25% of all employees.
The largest activity areas or clusters in the region as regards number of employed in production, service, trade and transport, etc, are roughly the following: car and vehicle - 50,000; food - 50,000; electronics and IT - 20,000; chemistry and petrochemical industry - 9,000; textile and clothing - 7,5000; wood and paper - 7,5000; pharmaceutical - 6,000; furniture - 5,500.
