The first visit from the region of Upper Galilee, Israel to Krakow, Poland took place week commencing 2nd March 2003 and was attended by our SAIL member for Upper Galilee, Prof Uri Marchaim.
Visits were conducted to Cracow University of Technology, Mining and Metallurgy University (AGH), University of Agriculture, Cracow Science & Technology Park, Marshall Office, company Chlodnie Zgoda Spolka, among others.
Higlights of the secondment included:
* Visiting the company, Chlodnie Igloopol/ZGODA headquartered in Krakow. The food company is involved in the production of frozen vegetables and fruits and produce frozen meat as well. They export mainly to Russia and West Europe, and Israel. Possible collaboration was discussed re: food processing industries in the Galilee region and also the subject of waste treatment.
* An introduction to the science/industrial park developments in Krakow Park Technologiczny linked to the universities in the Krakow region. Discussions took place with the president and vice-president of Krakow Center for Advanced Technologies Ltd, re: presenting a joint proposal for a Biotechnological Incubator as well as a possible investment in the Free Tax Zone. Meetings were held with staff members and researchers, managers and directors from research centres in Krakow who are currently in planning for the development of an industrial science park.
* Several meetings took place with researchers at the Krakow University of Technology. During this visit discussions were held with professors from the Institute of Water Engineering and Water Management, to discuss subjects of ecology and water management and possible collaboration; from the Department of Environmental Engineering offering expertise with companies for joint projects in air-conditioning and heating systems, from the Department of Chemistry and Technology of Polymer to discuss subjects related to the plastic industries and possible projects with their “Plastic Valley” near Tarnow with their Galilee colleagues, and also the Department of Environmental Engineering expressed an interest in collaborating on Biogas projects and waste management.
* A round table discussion with 8 people was set up at the Marshal’s office of the Department of Industry and Infrastructure. The deputy director of the department chaired the meeting and expressed interest in collaboration. The University of Agriculture in Krakow explained the future of agricultural extension and expressed their interest to learn from Israel. A discussion was held on issues relating to Agro-tourism and an exchange of experience as well as the subjects of cooling and fruit storage, technology incubators in these fields and the experience gained in the Galilee region of co-operative marketing of products from the small farms.
* At Jagiellonian University a meeting was held with several researchers from the Biotechnology Center to discuss possible collaboration and transfer of know-how as well as joint projects with industries and the Free Zone Park. The subjects of handling IP and collaboration with industries were also discussed.
