Study Tour 8th – 11th April 2003 to NW Ireland

Day 1 - Arrival & Welcome Dinner.

The agenda for day 2(am) shows that we will be visiting with Udaras na Gaeltachta, the Development Agency for the Irish speaking area. Population about 30,000. There will be some information given on some cultural tourism projects. The University of Galway have plans to develop an outreach centre in this area and the agency will outline the issues involved in this decision.

In the pm of day 2, we intend to visit with Letterkenny Institute of Technology (LYIT). Padraig Gallagher is the Industry Liaison Manager there. He will outline how the 3rd level college collaborates with the different development agencies (Enterprise Ireland; IDA; Micro Business Agency & Udaras) and will highlight some practical projects that have taken place. 1 project with an ICT company and other generic training programmes. There will also be a presentation from Dr. John Slater and his colleague, Dr. Brian Carney about his R & D project in Marine Biology.

On Day 3: Sligo Institute of Technology where Rosemary O’Reilly is the Industry Liaison Manager, will outline the various programmes available for 3rd level /Industry linkages e.g. Tech Transfer and general R & D. The professors from Engineering, Healthcare and Environmental Departments will be at this meeting to discuss their specific areas. The Institute will outline the steps followed in developing projects with a large company, Masonite Ltd. This company manufacturers moulded door facings in a very rural area in Leitrim. We will travel by bus in the afternoon to visit this company and hear their views on the relationship between the company and the 3rd level college. The company will give an outline of their experiences to date – good and bad!

On Day 4: Visit to St Angelas College, Sligo where there is a €2.5m Food Development Centre being built. Current projects between the college and industry are the development of new food products especially added value fish products, sensory analysis testing etc. The college would also like to present on their Education course specialising in the textiles area.

There will also be a presentation by SAIL member organisation Enterprise Ireland on the programme and funding sources available to industry to collaborate with 3rd level colleges.
